Tigers strike early to stripe Bluejays with loss

GRINNELL — Host Grinnell countered a Perry run in the top of the first inning with two tallies of their own before scoring six times in the second frame en route to a 10-1 non-conference win Monday.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

The Tiger hardballers were playing in their 28th game, improving to 20-8 overall, while the Bluejays fell to 7-9 in 12 fewer outings.

Jayden Gibson limited Perry to just one run on four hits, two walks and two hit batsmen in seven innings. He finished with 10 strikeouts.

Alex Farmer had two hits and two RBIs for the hosts, with Jake Hull hitting a single and a double while also reaching on an error to drive in four runs. Ethan Mitchell played a role in the win as well, producing a hit, drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch. He scored all three times.

Perry’s lone run came when Gavin Boyer hit a one-out single in the first. Courtesy runner Kaden Boyer moved up on a ground out, then scored on an Aaron Lockwood base hit.

Kaleb Olejniczak and Kyle Lockwood also had hits for Perry, with Austin Carpenter and Kato Dougan drawing walks while Gavin Boyer and Just Stammer were hit with pitches. Olejniczak had two steals for the Jays.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Lockwood was roughed up in the start. He lasted one inning, allowing a total of eight runs in five hits and three walks while striking out two.

Avery Meister pitched well in long relief, allowing two runs on two hits, a walk and hit batter in five innings. He finished with seven strikeouts.

Perry hosts Bondurant-Farrar tonight in a game postponed from June 6. The Bluejays will then entertain Kuemper Catholic Thursday.
