The resumes of those who will serve as instructors at the 2018 Perry Wrestling Camp sparkle with success, both on and off the mat.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]
In addition to Bluejay head coach Mark Weber and his staff, campers will receive personal instruction from former Perry head coach Trevor Kittleson. Kittleson, currently an assistant coach at Loras College, competed as a collegian at the University of Northern Iowa under coach Doug Schwab, who was himself a national qualifier.
Also serving at the camp will be former Iowa Hawkeye national champion and four-time All-American Derek St. John. Now an assistant at Iowa State University, St. John wrestled for current Iowa coach Tom Brands. St. John has also spent time as an assistant coach at Virgina Tech and North Dakota State.
Pablo Ubasa, who leads the well-regarded Ubasa Wrestling Academy, will also be on hand for the camp. Ubasa competed in college under Hall of Fame coach Dan Gable.
Weber noted the camp is open for both boys and girls entering grades 3-12. Campers must be willing and able to work hard, he said, as well as follow direct instruction and have fun in the process.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]
Camp will be held July 26 and 27 from 6-8 p.m. and from 8-a.m.-12 p.m. July 28 in the Perry Wrestling Room, located in the Field House west of Dewey Field. Cost of the camp is $75, with checks payable to Junior Jay Wrestling Club.
Registration can be made the Perry High School office, although walk-up registrations at the camp will be accepted.
Weber noted the focus will be on learning and mastering wrestling techniques that will help individuals have success at every level of the sport. Wrestlers will also be instructed on the same mental approaches used by Hawkeye wrestlers under Gable as part of the most decorated mat program in the nation.
