HARLAN — Undefeated and top-ranked, Treynor proved to be all the hype surrounding the team has suggested Monday, as the 24-0 Cardinals had little trouble in stopping upstart Woodward-Granger, 81-50, in their Class 2A Substate 8 Final.

W-G finishes 15-10 overall after a 9-9 mark in the West Central Activities Conference. The 15 wins are the most in a season in at least 25 years for a Hawk team, and no W-G cage unit has reached a substate final since 1986.

Treynor was simply too much, racing to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and blistering the nets in streaking to a 45-23 halftime edge. The score stood at 69-34 after three periods, setting up the 31-point win.

The Cardinals buried 13-of-24 3-pointers and distributed 27 assists in the win. They were 6-of-11 at the foul line, with the Hawks sinking 14-of-18 free throw attempts.Luke Clausen had 26 points for Treynor, with Jack Stogdill adding 13 points, Dillon Fauble 12 and Jon Schwarke 10. Jerry Jorgensen added six points, Craig Chapman and Jack Tiarks four points apiece, Matt Dickerson three points, P.J. Peartrowsky two and Kyle Christensen one.

Schwarke had 10 rebounds and four blocks, Faubel and Stogdill seven assists apiece, with Clausen and Jorgensen each making four assists while Faubel came away with three steals.

Sophomore Keith Braunschweig poured in 26 points for W-G, making two 3-pointers and draining 6-of-7 free throws en route to the team-high total.

Kaya Bowlsby tallied seven points and Reese Jamison six, with Noah Hoyt scoring five points, J.P. Nixon three, Brendan Bird two and Cole Theisen one.

Head coach Brent Achenbach will have to replace Nixon, Theisen and Bird for next season, but appears set for continued success. W-G was just 3-18 three years ago and 2-20 two seasons ago while improving to 9-13 last year before ending the current campaign 15-10.
