TRURO — Two of the six Woodward-Granger wrestlers who earned podium spots secured the top step at the Rich Gray Classic Saturday, helping the Hawks to a seventh-place finish in the 16-team field.

Senior Austin Scharlau won the 152-pound weight class, with sophomore Cody Fisher remaining undefeated while winning at 195 to highlight the day for the Hawks.

Class 1A 10th-ranked host Interstate-35 win the event going away with 204 points, with Martensdale-St. Marys and Van Meter/Earlham tying for second place with 142 points apiece. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont was fourth at 132, Des Moines East fifth at 128 and Albia sixth at 127.5.

Fisher continued his tornado-like swath of destruction through the 195-pound ranks with a pair of pins and a technical fall to improve to 42-0 in winning at 195.

Scharlau (31-13) had one of his strongest showings of the season in winning his weight class. The senior opened with a pair of pins, then claimed his crown with two decisions.

Hunter Pierce (31-12) was 1-2 with a decision to finish fourth at 106, with Gabe Yingst (36-7) 4-1 with four wins by pin in claiming fifth place at 160. Dillon Fogarty (26-15) placed fifth at 220 with a 2-1 mark and two pins, with Cale Pritchett (19-17) sixth at 170 after a 3-2 record that included two pins and a major decision.

Colt Palmer (23-18 at 132) and Cole Carman (26-16 at 145) were both 1-2, with each winning by pin, but neither was able to secure a podium spot.

Dilynn Lewiston (17-17 at 113), Ryan Munoz (24-16 at 126), Jay Dorenkamp (15-24 at 138), Kade Polich (11-23 at 182) and Jacob Kepford (2-2 at 285) were all 0-2 for the Hawks. W-G left the 120-pound division open.

W-G will join ADM and Boone for a Tuesday quadrangular at Perry, and will then take part in the annual Charger Invite in Guthrie Center Saturday.
