Law enforcement officers from four agencies are trying to corral some 26 horses Friday night after the horses’ owner released them about 6 p.m. from a burning horse barn east of the Dale Maffitt Reservoir about 6 p.m.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s office, Warren County Sheriff’s office, Polk County Sheriff’s office and West Des Moines Police Department, with assistance from West Des Moines Animal Control officers and volunteers with horse trailers, seek to capture the animals at this hour.
The officers are also controlling traffic speed in the vicinity of the U.S. Interstate 35 interchange with Iowa Highway 5, with horses reported as close to the interstate as one-sixteenth of a mile.
Numerous reports have been received about the at-large horses by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office.
ThePerryNews.com will update this story as information becomes available.
One horse perished. Twenty-four found. One missing still as of 10 p.m.
You must have insider sources. Do you know what were the circumstances of the one horse’s death?
He wouldn’t leave his stall. He was closest to the fire. It could have been more horses and people! He is running free now.
Yes, he surely is. Glad the losses were no greater, but still tragic.
