Van Meter boys use early surge to top Panorama

VAN METER — Undefeated Van Meter improved to 16-0 overall and 14-0 in WCAC boys play with a comfortable 57-37 win over visiting Panorama Friday.

Panorama, which fell to 5-13 overall and 3-12 in conference play, trailed by a 12-4 margin after one quarter of play and faced a 30-12 deficit at the half. After scoring just 12 points in two quarters the Panthers put 14 points on the board in the third frame, but the Bulldogs countered with 13 of their own and led, 43-26, entering the fourth period.

Van Meter shot 20-of-39 from the floor and 8-of-11 at the foul line, and while Panorama sank 11-of-16 free throws, the Panthers connected on just 11-of-40 from the field.

Panorama freshman Zac Rizzuti lays in two points against host Woodward-Granger Dec. 20. The two WCAC foes will renew acquaintances Tuesday in Panora.

Mitchell Pomeroy had 18 points to lead all scorers, with Bulldog teammates Ryan Schmitt and J.J. Durflinger adding 14 and nine points, respectively. Blake Fryar had eight points, with five points from Marshall Smith and three from Jack Trudo closing the scoring list.

Zac Rizzuti’s 15 points and 10 from Gracen Welberg paced Panorama. Jacob Merschman added six points, with Blaine Barber, Michael Allen and Jacob Iseminger contributing two points apiece. Welberg had six rebounds and Luke South five, with Merschman making three assists.

Panorama hosts Woodward-Granger Tuesday and Ogden Friday in a pair of WCAC contests.
