Dean Shiflet will turn 100 Sunday Feb. 21, and his friends are invited to flood his mailbox with birthday wishes.

A Kansas native, Shiflet served in World War II as a turret gunner on a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, stationed in Italy 1942-1945 and flying 50 missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.”

Dean moved in 1955 to a farm near Bagley and farmed until he was 70 years old, retiring in 1991. He and his wife, Ruth, who passed in 2017, were married 75 years. They have three children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

“We would love to have a big celebration for this kind man and WWII veteran,” said Connie Shiflet Culbertson, Dean’s daughter, “but with gatherings being difficult at this time, we are going to have a card shower. No need to get out for a fancy card. Just grab a piece of paper, write a quick message and send in a regular envelope.”
