Woodward-Granger prepares to snap the ball against visiting Martensdale-St. Marys in their season opening game August 28. The Hawks will host Southwest Valley Friday at 7 p.m. for Homecoming.

MADRID — Michael Santi scored six touchdowns in the first half to power Madrid to a 42-6 win over Woodward-Granger in their non-district meeting Septmeber 4. Santi returned the opening kick-off, caught a touchdown pass and ran for four scores as the Tigers overpowered the Hawks.

However, not as was doom-and-gloom for W-G, as the Hawks recovered two fumbles and had several other bright spots off which to build as the prepare to travel to Truro for a Class 1A District 8 bout with Interstate-35 this Friday.

Linebacker Nick Musich (55) and defensive tackle Drew Jacobson (58) quickly close a hole at the line of scrimmage and make a stop for little gain.

Hawk quarterback Brendan Bird rolls out to his right and finds an open Johnnie Morgan, who does a good job of coming back toward the ball. The play gained 22 yards.

The ball is ripped free from a Madrid runner and bounds into the open, where Morgan recovers for the Hawks on the Tiger 14-yard line.

Blocking from Jacobson (58), Brody Easter (71) and Logan Canova (33) allows Tanner Vermaas (28) to follow Josh Saak (27) over left tackle and into the end zone.

The opportunistic W-G defense takes advantage of a botched hand off, with Jacobson (58) and Musich (55) falling on the pigskin.

ThePerryNews thanks W-G assistant coach Drew Wilkins and others for their help in providing these highlights.
