STUART — Both ends of a West Central Activities Conference baseball twin bill went to Woodward-Granger Thursday, with the Hawks topping West Central Valley by scores of 9-5 and 5-2.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

The W-G offense was far from hot in the doubleheader, accounting for only seven hits but capitalizing on most. The Hawks were loose on the base paths, stealing a combined 19 bases and using 15 total walks to help accumulate scoring opportunities.

WCV (8-10, 4-9) was the visitor in the opening game and held a 4-1 lead after five frames before W-G (13-4, 10-3) suddenly went off for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to flip the score to 9-4 in their favor. A single Wildcat tally in the top of the seventh was not enough to change the outcome.

Cole Theisen started for W-G and went four frames, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two. Caden Easter tossed two frames of middle relief and collected the win, yielding one hit and one walk while notching two strikeouts. Alex Bice threw the final inning, allowing a run on three hits.

Reese Jamison led the Hawk attack with two singles and three RBIs, with Jack Grell hitting a double while Bryce Achenbach and Hunter Pifer added base hits. Theisen drew two walks and had a RBI while courtesy runner Pacey Moats scored three times.

W-G broke open a 1-1 game with four runs in the top of the fourth to claim victory in the nightcap.

Jay Dorenkamp went 5-2/3 innings on the bump, surrendering two runs on four walks and three hits. Bice was again called upon for relief, pitching 1-1/3 innings and allowing one hit. Dorenkamp struck out three batters in claiming the win, with Bice fanning two.

Singles from Matt Buch and Grell were the only hits in the game for the Hawks. Grell had two RBIs and Theisen — who walked twice and stole three bases — adding one RBI.

W-G will host Winterset tonight for a non-conference contest before entertaining Madrid Monday.
