W-G basketball drops both ends of two twin sets

WOODWARD, Iowa — The week started on a down note for the Woodward-Granger cagers, as both the Hawks girls and boys were stopped short of victories during home games both Monday and Tuesday.

The W-G girls (7-12, 5-8) fell to Class 2A No. 6 Panorama (18-1, 12-0), 59-22, Tuesday after a 56-43 loss to Interstate-35 Monday.

The Hawk boys (1-16, 1-13) were equally as unfortunate, falling, 77-58, to the Panthers (13-5, 10-2) Tuesday and by a 61-47 margin to the Roadrunners Monday.

The Hawk girls fell into a 26-6 hole after eight minutes of Tuesday’s game and faced a 41-9 halftime deficit, which was too great to overcome.

Darby Nixon had 11 points, Grace Deputy six, Kenzie Dresback three and Lexi Bogardus two for the hosts.

Payton Beckman led Panorama with 18 points, with Laci Rishel adding 15 points and Jaidyn Sellers 10.

The Hawks held a 24-23 halftime lead against the Roadrunners, but found themselves facing a 41-32 deficit entering the fourth quarter and were unable to battle back.

Nixon led W-G with 15 points, which included three 3-pointers in the first half.

Deputy scored all 14 of her points in the second half, with Rian Jamison providing eight points, Bogardus five and Dresback one.

Kaitlyn Morris had 16 points, Averi Ransom 15 and Caroline Glenn 12 for I-35.

The Hawk boys faced a major deficit right from the get-go in their game as they trailed, 28-8, after one quarter and 39-18 after two.

Carter Moran poured in 22 points and Brody Nardini 16 for W-G, put their efforts were not enough to tip the balance. Moran finished with nine rebounds and Nardini with eight while Josh Hultman, who scored four points, pulled down seven boards.

Collin Nardini and Dane Polich tallied five points apiece and Chandler Drake four, with Jack Meusburger scoring two points.

Five Panthers reached double-digits in scoring, with Braylon Dawes scoring 18 points while sinking six 3-pointers.

W-G was within striking distance of I-35 at the intermission, with the guests leading 27-18. The Roadrunners opened a 43-30 lead as the fourth frame began, but the Hawks could not close the gap.

Brody Nardini had 12 points, Hultman nine and Polich eight. Collin Nardini contributed six points, Don David five, Drake four and Moran three.

Collin Nardini had two 3-pointers, with Brody Nardini, Hultman and David each sinking a trey. Brody Nardini finished with 10 rebounds, with Hultman grabbing eight.

Kale Day led all scorers with 30 points, with Jace Beavell adding 17.

W-G will host Van Meter Friday in their next action.
