W-G basketball teams visit AC/GC after hosting M-SM

GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa — Woodward-Granger played on consecutive nights recently, traveling to AC/GC Friday for a WCAC twinbill after hosting Martensdale-St. Marys Thursday for a pair of non-conference game.

W-G (1-3, 0-1) fell to AC/GC, 53-23, in the girls game Friday after suffering a 59-32 loss to M-SM the day before. The Hawk boys lost, 68-51, to the Chargers and by a 37-25 final to the Blue Devils Thursday.

The Hawk girls faced a 28-15 halftime deficit Friday, and then were outscored, 17-4, in the third quarter as the game slipped away.

Darby Nixon had 12 points, Grace Deputy eight points, Rian Jamison two and Kenzie Dresback one for W-G.

The host Hawks led, 24-22, over M-SM Thursday, but struggled in the third quarter and entered the final frame trailing, 38-31. The offense then disappeared for W-G, with a 23-1 fourth quarter generating the lopsided final.

Deputy led W-G with 17 points, with Nixon adding 10. Georgia Simmons and Lexi Bogardus had two points apiece, with Jamison adding a free throw.

Statistical information from Friday’s W-G boys game was not available. The Hawks were leading, 29-21, at the break, but trailed, 50-37, after three frames.

Thursday’s outing was much more low-scoring, with M-SM holding a 23-18 halftime lead and a 29-22 edge after three stanzas.

The Blue Devils were aided in victory by finishing with a 37-20 advantage in total rebounds.

Josh Hultman had nine points and six boards for W-G, with Dane Polich adding six points. Brody Nardini tallied four points, five caroms, three assists and two steals, with Collin Nardini and Carter Moran each scoring three points.

Both Hawk teams are off until Friday when they travel to Madrid for a WCAC set.
