W-G cagers split pair with Madrid

MADRID, Iowa — Woodward-Granger was a 48-33 winner in Friday’s WCAC game against host Madrid, with the Tigers knocking off the visiting Hawks, 61-45, in the boys contest.

W-G (2-3, 1-1) held a small 15-11 lead after the first period of the opener, but managed to spread the margin to 27-19 at the break. The Hawks then used an 11-7 edge in third quarter scoring to create a 38-26 bulge over the Tigers (0-7, 0-3) en route to the win.

Grace Deputy had 21 points and six rebounds to lead W-G, with Darby Nixon tallying 12 points, four assists and four steals.

Georgia Simmons aided the win by providing eight points and four assists, with Lexi Bogardus having seven points. Rian Jamison chipped in six rebounds, and Kenzie Dresback five caroms.

The Hawk boys (0-3, 0-2) began their game with a 14-6 lead, but the Tigers (5-1, 3-0) rallied to tie the game at 23-all at the half. A 21-12 spurt pushed Madrid into a 44-35 lead entering the fourth quarter, a deficit W-G was not able to overcome.

Brody Nardini and Josh Hultman each had nine points for W-G, with Carter Moran adding eight points and Dane Polich seven.

Collin Nardini provided six points, Don David three, Jack Meusburger two and Ethan Moats one.

Hultman pulled down seven rebounds and Brody Nardini five boards, with Collin Nardini making four steals while Moran had three assists.

W-G hosts Des Moines Christian tonight and Ogden Friday.
