GRRENFIELD — Host Nodaway Valley swept both varsity races at their own invitational Monday, with the Woodward-Granger boys fourth and the Hawk girls 10th in a pair of 10-team fields.
Top-ranked Nodaway Valley easily won the boys side with near-perfect 19 points. Earlham (76) was a distant second and Martensdale-St. Marys (137) third, with W-G edging Van Meter, 152-153, for fourth place. The boys combined varsity/junior varsity race featured 145 runners.
Trevor Faultonson (20 minutes, 57.24 seconds), Alex Bice (20:59.2) and Chandler Cavanaugh (21:07.58) finished 27-28-29 for W-G, with Kaya Bowlsby (33rd, 21:29.29) and Caleb Jones (35th, 21:42.65) also scoring for the varsity. Cody Garland (47th, 22:25.54) and Hunter Pierce (50th, 22:44.21) completed the varsity seven.
Keith Braunschweig (51st, 22:45.00) and Dylan Steele (59th, 23:47.3) were the first two W-G junior varsity boys to cross. Nich Busch (89th, 25:50.98), Sam Peterson (90th, 25:52.43), Kurt Crouse (100th, 27:15.63), Cole Theisen (102nd, 27:30.24) and Logan Roll (110th, 29:49.03) also ran for the Hawk JV.
Nodaway Valley (78), Earlham (79) and Mount Ayr (91) claimed the top three varsity girls spots, with W-G scoring 227 points in a 104-runner race.
Posey Robinson placed 27th in 26:43.32 to lead the Hawk girls. Natalie Helbling (37th, 28:13.14), Kaitlyn Peters (42nd, 28:47.66), Chloe David (45th, 29:19.16) and Emily Lingner (76th, 37:44) rounded out the quintet who scored. Hannah Lingner (84th, 42:37) also competed for W-G.
The W-G boys were seventh in an eight-team grade 7-8 field, which ran a coed 3200. Interstate-35 was the boys winner with 62 points while W-G had 148 points. There were 67 boys and 65 girls in the race (times of finishers were not provided).
Alex Foster (15th), Carsten Wright (26th), Parker Griffen (34th), Lucas Hanson (35th) and Joel Harney (38th) scored for the Hawk boys. Ryan Fitch (42nd), Landon Bogardus (48th) and Nick Bermel (51st) also navigated the course.
Earlham won the girls event with 40 points. W-G was fourth in a seven-team field with a score of 89.
Makayla Hanna (12th), Sydney Grell (14th) and Katie Grell (16th) were the first three Hawks down the chute, with MaKenzie Dresback (18th) and Kaitlyn Smith (29th) also in action.
W-G returns to competition Thursday with a visit to the Saydel Invitational.
