W-G cross country runs at WCAC meet

PANORA, IA — Woodward-Granger joined the rest of the WCAC Thursday for the conference cross country meet, with Panorama playing host.

Des Moines Christian scored 30 points to win the boys race, with W-G eighth of 11 at 226. The girls title went to Van Meter, with 45 points, with W-G eighth of 10 at 208.

DMC’s Aaron Fynaardt won the boys crown in 15 minutes, 57.3 seconds while Van Meter’s Claire Kelly claimed the girls title in 19:36.35.

Cael Leighton (40th, 20:23.33), Healey Hill (42nd, 20:35.1), and Alex Younts (45th, 20:52.52) were the top Hawks to finish, with Sterling Parkinson (49th, 21:25.83) and Aiden Topalovich (50th, 21:30.47) also scoring. Elijah Taylor (64th, 23:14.57) and Grant Polito (67th, 24:41.99) also ran for the varsity.

Chloe Creger (27th, 23:32.73) and Danika Leuenberger (35th, 23:38.99) were the quickest pair of the Hawk girls, with points also coming from Adysen Chruchill (43rd, 24:24.81), Libby Grell (45th, 24:54.68), and Jaidyn Achenbach (52nd, 26:41.67). Also running were Kylee Woodard (58th, 27.49.44) and Marissa Trees (64th, 29:09.85).

Earlham (32) won the boys middle-school race, with W-G seventh of nine (117) on the two-mile course.

Cooper Finestead was fifth in 13:28.8 for W-G, with Heston Parkinson 34th in 16:28.49, Zayden Smothers 37th in 16:34.54, and Braden Love 41st in 17:23.8. Michael Kundel was 44th in 18:23.46, Isaac Anderson 47th in 18:54.72, with Noah Faust crossing in 30 minutes flat.

Van Meter won the middle school girls event with 30 points. The W-G girls were third of nine at 54.

Alena Scheck (14:50.11) was seventh and Lucy Fleshner (15:07) 10th for the Hawks, with Callie Fenceroy (17th, 15:39.31) and Sunshine Casey (20th, 15:58.72) also scoring, as the MS race counted only the top four finishers as opposed to five for the varsity runners.

Maddie Martin (37th, 17:23.71), Macy Behrens (39th, 17:30.59), and Francis Smeltzer (17:34.1) also competed for W-G.

W-G will compete Thursday in state qualifying meet at AC/GC.
