W-G cross country runs the course in Madrid

MADRID — The Woodward-Granger girls finished second and the Hawks boys fifth at the Madrid Cross Country Invite at Grant’s Woods Park Thursday.

Madrid won the girls team race with 36 points, with W-G second at 68. Ogden placed third at 72, Perry fourth at 75 and Colo-NESCO fifth at 90.

Defending Class 1A state champ and top-ranked Madrid collected just 23 points to easily claim the boys team honors. Ogden was second at 43, with Colo-NESCO (87), Perry (121), W-G (134) and Woodward Academy (135) following.

Perry junior Jaylene Karolus was the girls champion after finishing in 21 minutes, 51 seconds. Freshman Libby Grell was the top W-G harrier, crossing the line in 24:48.

Juniors Sydney (26:23) and Katie Grell (26:32) were 14th and 15th, respectively, with Makenzie Dreback 16th in 27:05 while Madisyn Mann was 17th in 27:24. Avery Smith (18th, 27:41) and Kaitlyn Smith (25th, 29:14) also ran but did not have their scores used for the varsity total, with Marissa Trees (32:40) completing the course as well for the Hawks.

Clay Pehl of Madrid ran a 16:06 to win boys individual honors, with Carston Wright the top Hawk with an eighth-place clocking of 18:31.

Scoring for the W-G boys were Hailey Hill (19th, 20:51), Xavier Ibarra (34th, 23:47), Kurt Crouse (36th, 24:23), and Kainen Fuson (37th, 24:24). Tjaden Smeltzer (39th) and Parker Griffin (40th) also ran the route, though the latter two did not score for the varsity.

W-G will not resume competition until traveling to Huxley Sept. 14 for the Ballard Invite, with the Panorama Invite scheduled for Sept. 17.
