WOODWARD — When the AC/GC and Woodward-Granger softball teams met in Guthrie Center May 25 a total of 13 runs were scored, with W-G claiming a 10-3 win.
Tuesday’s WCAC rematch witnessed AC/GC score 13 runs of their own, but it was not enough for victory, as the host Hawks crossed the plate 15 times to post the win.
W-G (6-5, 3-1) held a 5-1 lead after two innings, but eight third-inning runs moved AC/GC (5-5, 2-4) into a 9-5 advantage. The Hawks touched home three times in the fourth and seven more times in the fifth to create a 15-9 margin. The Chargers surged back into the game with four tallies in the seventh, but had their rally fall just short of producing a win.
Riley Jamison threw all seven frames for the hosts. She allowed 13 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits and six walks while striking out two.
Eighth-grader Jorga Hoover tossed five innings for AC/GC, surrendering 11 runs (eight earned) while walking three. Katelyn Thompson was touched for four runs (two earned) in two innings of relief.
Jamison had four hits for W-G, as did Kaycee Major, who drive in three runs. Bree Lesch was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, Maggi Mallong 3-for-4 with a double, Alissa Smeltzer 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Kendra Husmann 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Miranda Aunspach provided a triple and three RBIs, with Katelyn Bandstra smacking a triple with Kayley Dresback added a single. Courtesy runner Natalie Weaver scored four times for the Hawks.
Sierra O’Brien was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs for the visitiors, with Emily Pavelka and Leya Renshaw each hitting doubles.
W-G plays Pleasantville at 10 a.m. and Lewis Central at 2 p.m. today in the first day of the annual Hawk Softball Classic. The hosts will face Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln at 10 a.m. Saturday, with a meeting against Perry slated for 2 p.m.
