W-G's Mae Anderson pulled up for two points against Saydel as teammate Kaitlyn Peters (24) battled for position earlier this season.

WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger girls basketball team were creating plenty of good looks at the basket in the first half Monday, but the ball simply would not fall through the cylinder.

All that changed after the intermission, helping the hosts turn a narrow four-point halftime lead into a 42-30 non-conference win over Saydel.

W-G (2-3) held an 11-7 lead after the first quarter, a margin that remained unchanged as the teams entered the break with the Hawks leading, 19-15.

Shots began falling in the third quarter as the hosts began to handle the occasional pressure applied by the Eagles. The offensive spark appeared to inspire the defense as well, with Hawk players diving onto the floor several times to scrap for loose balls, an energy level Saydel (1-3) seemed unable to match.

Katie Schmidt did her best to keep the Eagles in the contest and finished with a game-high 21 points while pulling down seven rebounds, but the Hawks kept the guests at bay and entered the fourth quarter with a 33-23 lead en route to the win.

Alyssa Bice had 16 points to lead W-G, with Katelyn Scharlau scoring eight points and Kaitlyn Peters six. Five points from Kayley Dresback, four from Mae Anderson, two from Natalie Helbling and a Lisa Pitman free throw rounded out the Hawk scoring.

W-G returns to action Friday with a trip to Van Meter for a WCAC contest.
