DES MOINES — Last season the Woodward-Granger girls ran in the 4×800 at the Class 2A State Meet. The team finished 23rd in 10 minutes, 33.45 seconds, and, in comments after the race, appeared to realize it was just a first step in becoming one of the better foursomes in 2A.
Thursday’s results showed what a year can do, as the Hawks claimed the 10th overall spot with a clocking of 10:05.95 in warm, mid-80 temperatures.
Emma Drake led the relay, handing off to Kaitlyn Peters, who then passed the baton to Ava Petersen. Anna Tague ran the anchor leg for W-G, finishing just ahead of WCAC rival Panorama, who placed 11th in 10:07.36. Monticello claimed the title in 9:35.18.
Drake, Peters and Tague had each run on the previous relay, with Petersen, a freshman, obviously new to the experience.
Drake, Tague, Kayley Dresback, and Petersen, in order, will compete today in the 4×400 preliminaries at 7 p.m. They are currently seeded 11th in 4:16.16.
Also in action will be the boys 4×400, who are the 15-seed with a clocking of 3:33.79. They are set to compete just after the girls 3A 4×400 sections finish, at approximately 7:40 p.m.
Bryce Achenbach, Ian Thompson, Josh Saak and Chandler Cavanaugh will carry the baton for W-G.
