STUART — Woodward-Granger used a dominant first quarter to claim a WCAC girls cage victory over host West Central Valley as the Hawks bounced back from a Friday loss at Van Meter.

W-G (6-9, 4-7) grabbed a 12-2 lead over WCV (3-10, 1-9) after eight minutes of play Tuesday, but the hosts played nearly even with the Hawks the rest of the way. The visitors added a point to their lead in the second frame to lead, 25-14, at the break, with each team scoring only six points in a sluggish third quarter. A 10-8 edge in the final period helped assure W-G of the win.

Emma Anderson had a game-high 13 points for the Hawks, with Kayley Dresback adding nine points and Katelyn Scharlau eight. Natalie Helbling provided seven point and Ava Petersen and Mae Anderson two each to cap the scoring.

W-G connected on 14-of-21 free throws while WCV sank 5-of-6. Dresback (7-of-8) and Helbling (3-of-4) fueled the advantage from the stripe.

Madelyn Jaegger led the Wildcats with 10 points, with Jenna Merical scoring six points, Michaela Jaegger five, Sydney Neal four and Joelle Grubbs three.

The Hawks were coming off a 37-28 setback at Van Meter (10-2, 7-2) Friday.

The Bulldogs held only a 17-12 lead at the half, but used an 11-5 third quarter to create a margin the Hawks could not overcome.

Scharlau and Emma Anderson each had 10 points for W-G, with Mae Anderson scoring five points and Dresback three.

Emily Roberts led Van Meter with 13 points, with Clair Lauterbach providing nine points.

W-G visits Coon Rapids-Bayard for a non-conference set Thursday before hosting Ogden Friday.
