WOODWARD — Des Moines Christian may have defeated Woodward-Granger, 59-32, in WCAC girls action Friday, but Hawk head coach Gary Dresback found several reasons to be pleased with his team.

“We played hard and battled them well,” he said. “They made a high percentage of 3-pointers, but we caused numerous turnovers and fought hard.”

DMC (10-4, 7-2) sank 10-of-29 3-pointers and turned a 14-3 first quarter lead into a 31-14 edge at the half. W-G (2-12, 0-10) kept battling, and played nearly even in the third frame, which ended with the Lions holding a 45-26 lead before pulling away for the win.

Emma Veenstra’s 20 points led all scorers, with DMC teammate Moriah Prewitt making four treys in scoring 14 points. Kalli Lawson had 10 points, Olivia Penland six, and Megan Miller, Dakoda Evans and Aspen Brockhouse three points apiece.

Katleyn Scharlau’s 11 points paced W-G. Alyssa Bice added nine points, Natalie Helbling four, Mae Anderson and Kayley Dresback three apiece and Kaitlyn Peters two.

The W-G girls are at North Tama (Traer) Tuesday and will host Van Meter Friday in a WCAC girls/boys set.
