W-G girls win title at own relays, Hawk boys finish third

Two days after the W-G boys win a meet, the Hawk girls take their turn posing with a trophy.

WOODWARD — Tuesday it was the Woodward-Granger boys track team that was celebrating after winning the Kip Janvrin Invitational in Panora. Thursday it was the turn of the Hawk girls squad to whoop it up, doing so after claiming the team title at their own event, the Hugh Cavanaugh Relays.

The W-G girls piled up 165 points to easily outdistance second-place Southeast Valley, who posted 140 points. Perry was third at 137, with Des Moines Christian fourth with 74 points.

DMC scored 151 points to win the boys crown, with SE Valley second at 142.5. W-G placed third with 133 point, three more than Perry. The W-G junior varsity boys scored 9.5 points in limited action.

The Hawk girls won only four events, but used solid depth to compile points.

Natalie Helbling cleared the high jump bar at 4 feet, 4 inches and Kaitlyn Bandstra landed 13 feet, 9 inches from the board in the long jump, both winning efforts.

The Hawks piled up points in the throwing disciplines, with Emma Buckman second and Kaycee Major fourth in the discus with spins of 92’6 and 68’8, respectively, with Buckman third (30 feet, 1/2 inch) and Kaitlyn Scharlau fourth (29’6-1/2) in the shot put.

W-G was strong in all three hurdle events. Savannah David was first (19.88 seconds) and Maddi Danti second (20.66) in the 100 high hurdles, with Savannah David second (1 minute, 22.56 seconds) and Chloe David third (1:22.4) in the 400 low hurdles while the David sisters, Danti and Bandstra teamed for second in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:22.56.

Emma Drake, Kaitlyn Peters, Anna Tague and Helbling were second in the 4×800 (10:45.91), with Bandstra, Helbling, Alyssa Bice and Quinn Kaufman second in the distance medley (5:20.91) while Kaufman, Bandstra, Chloe David and Riley Jamison teamed for fourth place in the sprint medley (2:21.41).

Bice, Jamison, Chloe Anderson and Mae Anderson were third, in 2:10.95, in the 4×200 while Drake, Tague, Peters and Helbling were third, in 4:35.7 in the 4×400. The 4×100 foursome of Kaufman, Bice, and the David sisters crossed fourth (1:01.36) for W-G.

Tague was second in the 200 dash in 28.84, with Drake (1:06.31) and Tague (1:08.27) placing 2-3 in the 400. Peters (2:39.67) and Drake (2:43.16) were 3-4 in the 800, Regan Kaufman (6:34.8) and Jamison (6:34.91) 2-3 in the 1500 and Quinn Kaufman sixth, in 15.39 seconds, in the 100 dash.

Like their girls team counterparts, the Hawk boys were victorious in three events, two of them field disciplines.

Alex Kirton’s shove of 37 feet, one-half inch claimed the shot put, with Jay Dohrenakmp fourth at 34’8. Kirton finished fourth and Brendan Bird fifth in the discus, the former throwing 111’1 and the later 104’9.

Bryce Achenbach won the long jump by nearly a foot after landing at 19’2, with Cale Pritchett second in the high jump after flopping over the bar at 5’6.

Chandler Cavanaugh (11.87) and Bird (12.13) were 2-4 in the 100, with Austin Scharlau fifth in the 200 (25.98) while Achenbach and Scharlau crossed 5-6 in the 400 in 57.68 and 58 seconds, respectively.

Jack Grell and Kaya Bowlsby used times of 5:23.86 and 5:33.03 to finish 5-6 in the 1600, with Alex Bice fourth, in 11:59.51, in the 3200. Payton Tague (1:03.31) and J.P. Nixon (1:03.84) were 2-3 in the 400 low hurdles, with Tae Calderon fifth (21.06) and Nick Moser sixth (22.6) in the 110 high hurdles.

Victory came for the Hawks in the shuttle hurdle relay, with Nixon, Tague, Moser and Ian Thompson finishing in 1:10.99. W-G was third in the 4×400 in 3:48.46, with Achenbach, Thompson, Scharlau and Marcus McConahay forming the foursome.

The Hawks were second in the five other relays. The 4×100 pairing of Bird, McConahay, Tague and Cavanaugh crossed in 47.28, with 4×200 unit of McConahay, Thompson, Cavanaugh and Josh Saak finished in 1:40.32 while Thompson, Achenbach, Grell and Cody Garland completed the 4×800 in 9:08.62.

The sprint medley quartet of Bird, Tague, McConahay and Cavanaugh clocked in at 1:42.62, with Saak, Pritchett, Nixon and Pacey Moats posting a 4:20.95 in the distance medley.

Both Hawk squads will compete in Carroll Monday. The boys will then have the remainder of the week off, but the girls will visit Ogden Thursday.
