LAST YEAR — Madrid’s traditional ground attack was at full force as the Tigers rushed 37 times for 467 yards and six touchdowns in a 52-16 win in Woodward.
Michael Santi carried seven times for 159 yards and two scores and caught the lone Tiger pass attempt of the game for a 26-yard touchdown. The Madrid defense made eight stops for loss in limiting the Hawk offense.
W-G threw for 108 yards and ran for 161 more. Race Brant caught six passes for 79 yards and ran once, scoring from 11 yards out. Tanner Vermaas (4-32) and Austin Scharlau (2-29) also had rushes for the Hawks.
ABOUT THE TIGERS — Madrid defeated visiting Van Meter, 50-36, in week one. Tiger quarterback Cade Kirkpatrick ran for 23 yards on nine carries and was 2-for-2 in the air for 17 yards.
Santi galloped for 392 yards and 5 TDs on 28 hauls, with Wyatt Smith rushing 16 times for 66 yards and a score.
Jack Schaffer’s 15 tackles led the defense, with Luke Hudnutt (who caught both passes the Madrid offense attempted) returning an interception 46 yards for a score.
ABOUT THE HAWKS — The W-G offense was sparse last Friday, but did just enough to help post an 8-0 win over Martensdale-St. Marys. W-G attempted one pass, which fell incomplete.
Tanner Vermaas had the only touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. He finished with 121 yards on 26 carries, with Josh Saak rushing eight times for 35 yards and Brant six times for 24 yards.
Austin Scharlau had seven total tackles and Drew Jacobson five, with Scharlau making one stop for negative yardage and Jacobson two.
