COLFAX — Woodward-Granger rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to snatch an 8-4 non-conference win away from host Colfax-Mingo Wednesday.

W-G was coming off a 13-3 loss to Earlham in five innings Tuesday, a day after the Hawks outlasted Panorama for a 13-10 win while Madrid had claimed a 5-4 win June 25.

Tuesday’s win over the Tigerhawks was welcome, of course, but the biggest news for the Hawks (14-8 overall, 6-8 in WCC) was the return of senior Mike Connor to the lineup.

Connor started on the mound and tossed four frames, allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit and two walks. He struck out six in the no-decision, and while he was hitless (with a walk) in three plate appearances, his return to active duty will clearly be an aid for the team as the season winds down.

Trailing 4-0, the Hawks scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to tie the game, then pulled away with the four-spot in the seventh.

Alex Bodermann and Dylan Garland both had two hits for W-G, with Marcus McConahay driving in two runs while Bodermann, Race Brant and Austin Scharlau each added RBIs.

Senior Ryan Renshaw collected the win on the bump with two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one, with Brady Aunspach tossing a scoreless seventh, allowing a walk and striking out two in helping secure the victory in the non-save situation.

EARLHAM 13, W-G 3 (5)

EARLHAM — The host Cardinals scored 13 runs on just five singles primarily due to 14 walks issued by four different Hawk pitchers.

W-G jumped to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat, but Earlham scored once in the second and twice in the third to tie the game. A seven-run fourth inning and three tallies in the fifth combined to end the game early.

McConahay had two hits and Bodermann, Brant and Aunspach one each, with Brant and Logan Lande each notching a RBI.

Bodermann allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight walks and two hits in 3-1/3 innings on the bump. Ben Krehbiel recorded two outs while surrendering a run on three walks, with Austin Ober touched for two runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds on an inning. Nate Devick yielded two runs on two walks and was on the mound when the game ended. Ober and Bodermann had one strikeout apiece.

Alan Schmidt allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in four innings to pick up the win. He struck out four and helped his own cause with a hit and four RBIs at the plate.

Canyon Hopkins tossed one inning for Earlham, walking one, allowing one hit and striking out one.

W-G 13, PANORAMA 10

WOODWARD — Runs came often, and in bunches, for both teams Monday, but it was W-G who managed to escape the slug fest with a 13-10 WCC win.

The teams were tied at 2-all after two innings and at 6-all entering the bottom of the fifth, but W-G crossed the plate five times in the frame to open an 11-6 lead. Panorama scored four times in the sixth to come to within a run, but two W-G tallies in their half of the sixth set the final score as neither teams scored in the seventh.

Brant had a double and two singles and Aunspach a single and a double while Bodermann and Tre Loge added two hits apiece to lead the W-G attack.

Renshaw was the winner despite throwing just 3-2/3 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks. Aunspach threw two innings and was touched for three unearned runs on a hit and two walks.

Bodermann went 1-2/3 innings, yielding two runs on three hits and three walks, with Garland allowing a run on two walks without retiring a batter. Renshaw had three strikeouts and Aunspach two.

MADRID 5, W-G 4

MADRID — The Tigers used a three-run rally in the sixth to grab a 5-3 lead, then held on for a 5-4 win over the Hawks June 25.

Garland suffered the loss. He yielded five runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while fanning three. Bodermann had one inning on the bump and recorded two strikeouts.

Brant was 4-for-4 with a double, with McConahay, Aunspach and Scharlau all recording two hits each, with Lande, Garland and Loge also providing base hits. Aunspach and Scharlau each had two RBIs for the guests.

Freshman Eli Gruefe earned the win in a complete-game effort. He allowed 13 hits but did not walk a batter and struck out two.

Bryce Dean and Tanner Miller had two hits apiece for Madrid, with Wyatt Smith swatting a double.
