Woodward-Granger tracksters host Hugh Cavanaugh Relays

WOODWARD — The first of two home meets was held at Uthe Track Thursday as the Woodward-Granger thinclads entertained a large field for the annual Hugh Cavanaugh Relays. The W-G boys were fourth in a six-team field, with the Hawk girls placing sixth out of seven teams.

Bondurant-Farrar’s 132 points won the boys side, with Des Moines Christian and Southeast Valley 2-3 with 106 and 101 points, respectively. W-G was fourth with 98 points, with Perry (71), Saydel (63), the W-G junior varsity (10) and the SE Valley JV (8) also in action.

The Hawk boys double-placed in three of four field events. Brendan Bird was second and Brody Easter fourth in the discus with spins of 130 feet, 6 inches and of 119’11, with Dillon Fogarty fourth (40’2-1/2) and Kade Polich fifth (40’2) in the shot put. Keith Braunschweig and Tae Calderon were 2-3 in the high jump, with both clearing 5-6, while Bryce Achenbach sailed 18’10 to place fourth in the long jump.

Ian Thompson ran the 800 in 2 minutes, 10.74 second to place second, with Caleb Jones sixth in the 1600 in 5 minutes, 20.65 seconds while Trevor Faltonson placed sixth in the 3200 in 11:41.81.

Kade Polich was sixth (12.14), Chandler Cavanaugh fifth (24.33) and Cale Pritchett sixth (59.25) in the 100, 200 and 400, respectively, while Braunschweig finished third in the 110 hurdles in 17.38. Pacey Moats and Nick Moser were 5-6 for W-G in the 400 low hurdles, crossing in 1:06.18 and 1:06.43.

Achenbach, Cavanaugh, Thompson and Josh Saak teamed to win the 4×400 in 3:41.02, with Achenbach, Cavanaugh, Thompson and Reese Jamison winning the distance medley in 3:56.38 while Worth Henry, Nick Moser, Pacey Moats and Braunschweig crossed third in the shuttle hurdle in 1:09.03.

Achenbach, Polich, Jamison and Jay Dorenkamp were third in the 4×100 (47.99), with Dorenkamp, Saak, Gage Lisle and Logan Roll fifth in the 4×200 (1:44.41). Dorenkamp, Saak, Jamison and Thompson united to finish third, in 1:43.07, in the sprint medley, with the foursome of Caleb Jones, Cody Garland, Jack Grell and Alex Bice third in the 4×800 in 9:18.82.

DC-G scored 186 points to dominate the girls field, with Webster City (99) and SE Valley (94) 2-3. Perry (63) was fourth, with B-F (61), W-G (38), DMC (34) and the B-F JV (7) rounding out the field.

Maggie Halferty (28.86) and Ava Peterson (2:49.43) were sixth in the 200 and 800, respectively, with Kaitlyn Peters fifth in the 1500 (5:46.44). Chloe David (1:21.69) and Natalie Helbling (1:27.24) scored points for third and fifth, respectively, in the 400 low hurdles.

Peters teamed with Helbling, Emma Drake, and Anna Tague to win the 4×800 in 10:46.69, with Drake, Peters, Tague and Peterson third, in 4:34.29, in the 4×400.

Kayley Dresback, Alissa Smeltzer, Gena Tague and Quinn Kaufman used a 2:08.31 to place fourth in the 4×200, with Smeltzer, Gena Tague, Chloe David and Katelyn Bandstra fifth in the 4×100 at 1:00.39.

The Hawk girls also received points for sixth place in each throwing event, with Katelyn Scharlau shoving the shot put 28’7 and Janae Jones spinning the discus 80 feet.

Both W-G teams will compete Monday in the Carroll Coed Relays, with construction at Carroll Stadium moving the event to Greene County. The W-G girls will also in action Thursday with a visit to Ogden.
