Woodward-Granger volleyball off to 4-4 start

WOODWARD — Des Moines Christian swept host Woodward-Granger Tuesday in WCAC volleyball, dropping the Hawks to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The Hawks are under the guidance of new head coach Bailey Hunt, who is running the program without, as of Wednesday, any assistant coaches.

W-G opened the season with a 25-8, 25-20 and 25-9 whipping of visiting West Central Valley Aug. 23. The Hawks finished 3-3 at the Skip Anderson Classic in Bondurant Saturday before falling to DMC Tuesday.

Anna Tague had 11 kills, Natalie Weaver eight and Emma Drake six kills against WCV, with Anna Smeltzer providing five kills and Elly Polich and Katelyn Scharlau three apiece. Drake had 20 assists, Polich 14 and Scharlau one.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Ashlyn Soelberg totaled eight digs and Drake seven, the Weaver making five digs and Polich three while Scharlau, Smeltzer and Tague had one apiece.

Smeltzer served 11-of-12 with six aces, Polich 10-10-1 and Weaver 6-8-2. Tague was 17-of-17, Drake 15-of-15, Soelberg 7-of-9 and Scharlau 2-of-3.

Saturday’s play began with a 21-18, 14-21, 16-14 loss to host Bondurant-Farrar, followed by a 21-18, 21-18 win over Burlington-Notre Dame and a 21-13, 21-18 loff to Williamsburg. Relegated to consolation play, W-G fell, 21-13, 21-3 to Sidney before defeating Boone, 21-14 and 21-15, and Perry, 21-8, 21-12.

Drake had 12 kills, 56 assists, 17 digs and 2.5 blocks at the event, with Polich accounting for seven kills, 24 assists, nine digs and two blocks while Scharlau had seven kills, one assist, five digs and three blocks and Soelberg three assists and 38 digs. Smeltzer tallied 10 kills, one assist, eight digs and three blocks while Tague had 25 kills, 35 digs and a block and Weaver 21 kills, four assists, 20 digs and one block.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]

Drake Served 61-64-10, Polich 31-34-4, Smeltzer 27-30-4 and Soelberg 28-29-2. Tague was 31-32-1, Weaver 34-37-6 and Scharlau 3-of-4.

The Hawks also received five assists, a dig and 1-of-2 serving from Megan Burkhart, one kill and one assist form Mae Anderson and a kill and two digs form Mya Kasiar. Lisa Pitman had a kill and Briley Bermel also played.

Saturday’s statistics do not include individual numbers from the Williamsburg match. Players stats were as yet unavailable from Tuesday’s match with DMC as well.

W-G will play five matches today at the ADM Classic, beginning with a bout against Perry at 4:30 p.m.
