Woodward-Granger wrestlers capture WCAC title

Yingst, Fisher finish 5-0 while six other Hawks boast 4-1 marks.

GUTHRIE CENTER — The strong season for the Woodward-Granger matmen continued Saturday, as the Hawks claimed the team crown at the WCAC Duals. W-G tied with Panorama at 4-1, but won their head-to-head meeting. A Hawk loss to Van Meter/Earlham did not come back to haunt them, as Panorama and West Central Valley each topped VM/E to drop the latter to 3-2.

W-G defeated Panorama, 48-28, and WCV, 48-27, before topping Ogden, 60-12. A 67-9 whipping of AC/GC followed, with the Hawks stumbling, 37-30, to VM/E in their final dual.

Gabe Yingst (160 pounds) and Cody Fisher (195) won titles by finishing 5-0, with six other Hawks — Hunter Pierce (106), Dilynn Lewiston (113), Ryan Munoz (120), Colt Palmer (132), Tyler Lawrenson (220) and Dillon Fogarty (285) all finished 4-1 in the respective weight class.

Yingst blew through his competition with four pins while receiving one forfeit, with second-ranked Fisher using two pins and a major decision to finish undefeated, as he was granted a pair of forfeits along the way.

Pierce recorded three pins and a decision, Lewiston had two pins and two forfeit wins and Munoz won twice by pin, once by major decision and once by forfeit. Palmer tallied three pins and a Sudden Victory I win, with Lawrenson recording two pins and a decision to add to a forfeit while Fogarty won three times via pin fall and once by forfeit.

Cole Carmen was 3-2 at 145 with two pins and a forfeit while Austin Scharlau won by fall, decision and forfeit in also finishing 3-2.

Payton Tague (126) scored two wins by pin, Jay Dorenkamp (138) a decision and a forfeit and Cale Prtichett (170) a pin and a decision as the trio each finished 2-3.

Also in action was Nate Rosan at 182, but he was unable to record a win in a tough weight class.

W-G will join Interstate 35 and Des Moines Roosevelt for a quadrangular at Des Moines Lincoln Tuesday, when finish their pre-holiday slate by hosting AC/GC, VM/E and East Union Thursday.
