Severe thunderstorm, flash flooding watches in effect

The National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Des Moines has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10 p.m. Monday for Dallas County and all of central and western Iowa.

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are developing this afternoon and will continue into tonight. The main threats will be damaging thunderstorm wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. An isolated tornado or two is also possible.

The NWS has also issued a flash flood watch in effect from 7 p.m. Monday until Tuesday afternoon for all of central Iowa.

Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is forecast possible through Tuesday morning, with localized amounts greater than 5 inches possible, the NWS said. Significant ponding and flash flooding are possible through Tuesday morning due to heavy rainfall.

In addition, renewed river flooding might result Tuesday through Thursday. Travelers are advsed to be aware of nighttime flooding and water covered roads.

Dallas County and the following Iowa counties are included under the severe thunderstorm watch: Adair, Audubon, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buena Vista, Butler, Calhoun, Carroll,  Cass, Cherokee, Crawford, Franklin, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hardin, Harrison, Humboldt, Ida, Jasper, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Monona, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Polk, Pottawattamie, Poweshiek, Sac, Shelby, Story, Tama, Warren, Webster,  Woodbury and Wright.
