Perry's Zach Stewart scored a technical fall against Panorama's Noah Kirtley to place third at 138 pounds in Saturday's Perry Invite.

WINTERSET — Wrestling coaches often preach to their charges, especially during dual meets, that “every point matters.” Tuesday’s head-to-head scrum between Perry and Winterset proved the saying true.

Tied at 38-all after all 14 bouts, the winner was chosen on criteria. In Tuesday’s case it fell all the way to the fourth criteria (most technical falls) and Perry was awarded the extra point to capture the win.

“Every point matters and I hope the guys realized that tonight,” Perry head coach Mark Weber said. “There were some points we missed, as well as bonus points we should not have given up.”

Each team won by pin three times, with Cori Alamina giving Perry their first pin at 195 pounds (the dual started at 160) by sticking Kory Pike in 1 minute, 47 seconds. Kaleb Olejniczak pinned Trenton Cook in four minutes at 126, with Justin Stammer helping secure the dual would end in at least a tie by pinning Blake Ryerson in 5:08 at 145.

Francisco Colin (170), Alexander Tapia (220) and Zachary Thompson (120) all collected victories by forfeit for the Bluejays.

Perry’s other victory came at 138, where Zach Stewart recorded an 11-4 decision over Kruise Kiburz.

Although dropping a major decision (10-2), Weber praised the effort of Cole Snyder, who had stepped up a class to 182 to face a Parker Maynes. The coach also noted the effort of Jacob Nelson at 132, who, while dropping an 11-3 major decision to Class 2A No. 8 Jack West, outscored the Husky standout in the third period.

Perry returns to action Thursday when they host Carlisle and Coon Rapids-Bayard/Glidden-Ralston. The triangular has been declared Pin Cancer and Youth Wrestling Recognition night.
