About a dozen 4-H Clover Kids from Perry made M&M cookie jars for Christmas gifts at a recent activities at the Dallas County Extension offices in Adel.

Clover Kids is the 4-H club for youngsters in kindergarten through third grade. The focus of this program is cooperative — not competitive — learning, which allows activities to be tailored and age-appropriate, said Lisa Mickelson, Extension director of families, youth and issues programming.

The M&M cookie jar activity gave the Perry Clover Kids lessons in measuring ingredients, following directions and making and using a funnel.

Clover Kids clubs meet monthly from September to May. Activities involve science, the environment, creative arts, music, animals food– just to name a few, Mickelson said.

“Clover Kids can participate in a bucket/bottle calf and bottle/lamb or goat shows as well as a Clover Kids Pet Show where we’ve had kids show anything from cats and dogs to hermit crabs and stuffed animals,” she said.

Clover Kids are recognized on a special day during the Dallas County Fair, when they show their non-animal projects to judges in a supportive environment. The 2018 Clover Kids Day is scheduled for Thursday, July 12.

Dallas County has 10 Clover Kid clubs offered in most communities. For more information about Clover Kids, contact Mickelson at 515-993-4281 or lmickel@iastate.edu
