Shattering records, Perry swimmers excel at regionals

The Perry High School swimmers pulled out all the stops when they competed Saturday in the 2023 Regional Swim Meet in Ames, setting numerous personal best times and breaking several school records.

Six regional meets were held across the state over the weekend, with winners advancing to statewide competition.

PHS junior Quin Mahler-Moreno advanced to the state meet in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke, breaking her own school records in both events.

PHS senior Sophia McDevitt advanced to the state meet in the 100 Butterfly.

The 200 Free and 400 Free Relays also qualified for state competition, breaking the previous PHS school records for in both events.

Perry finished in sixth place overall for the day, with host team Ames finishing first with 512 points, Sioux City West taking second place with 358 points, Carroll in third with 246 points, Ft. Dodge fourth with 233, Marshalltown fifth with 266, Perry sixth with 196, Boone seventh with 169, Oskaloosa eighth with 107 and Des Moines Hoover ninth with seven points.

A total of 16 personal best times were set in individual events by PHS swimmers.
