Happy birthday coach!

WOODWARD — With Madrid to visit Hawk Stadium August 25, the Woodward-Granger football team held their annual scrimmage Friday.

W-G was 3-6 overall last season and 3-4 in Class 1A District 5. Veteran head coach George Ashman will have to find a way to replace 60 percent of the carries, and 69 percent of the ground yardage gained, that were lost to the graduation of Tanner Vermaas, who ran 221 times for 1,397 yards and 21 of W-G’s 24 rushing touchdowns.

Almost the entire starting units on both sides of the ball return, giving the team plenty of experience, which Ashman, no doubt, hopes can be translated into productivity.

Woodward-Granger’s Pacey Moats shakes off Tate Lettow and heads down the sideline during Friday’s scrimmage.

The non-district schedule is brutal again this season, with Madrid visiting on August 25 while W-G travels to Van Meter September 1. W-G will be the home team against Woodward Academy when D5 play begins September 8, with a visit to Central Decatur slated for September 15 while Interstate-35 serves as the Homecoming foe September 22.

W-G will travel to Des Moines Christian September 29, then host Mt. Ayr, visit Pleasantville and entertain Pella Christian October 6, 13 and 20, respectively.

A full preview of the upcoming season will appear before August 24 in ThePerryNews.com, the home page for W-G sports.
